Put The Rise of the Jack O’Lanterns on your Bucket List! It’s entertaining and unique as you stroll through an area that has 5,000 hand-carved Illuminated Jack O’Lanterns. Some are simple, some are scary, others humorous and award winning. You will laugh and be in awe.
This October through November 1, 2015, The Rise of the Jack O’Lanterns is displayed in New York, Los Angeles and San Diego. I had the opportunity to visit the event at Descanso Gardens, about 25 minutes from downtown Los Angeles. It was fantastic.
We first showed our tickets and walked through Descanso Gardens’ gift shop decked out in Halloween and Fall decor and products. Outside were tables with colorful blinking light devil ears, wands and fun items that kids love to hold and wear in the dark. Adults were buying them too for themselves.
For those hungry – there was a Treat or Treat Depot selling smoked turkey legs, hot dogs, grilled corn on the cobs, Halloween cookies, warm spiced cider, hot chocolate, popcorn, churros and decorated apples.
1. Before entering the Jack O’Lanterns we stopped at a work station to watch one of the professional artists/sculptors carved a pumpkin and told us about the variety of tools he uses to get the image he has in mind.
2. Next, we walked along a 1/3-mile scenic walking trail stopping to take photos, while listening to an original music score produced exclusively for The RISE. This year there was a sport theme with a variety of skeleton athletes.
6. Watch out for the dragon that’s over 50 feet long and contains hundreds of pumpkins carved by a team of artists.
10. Another impressive collection of Jack O’Lantern’s were the characters from the hit Disney/Pixar movie Inside Out. Joy was my favorite. It takes about 45 minutes to an hour to see all of the pumpkins. To learn more about The Rise and to get tickets, click on this link – http://www.therise.org
