Jeni’s Splendid Summer Ice Cream Flavors

When I was approached to taste test two of Jeni’s new summer State Fair ice cream flavors, and her dairy-free Lemon Bar flavor, I immediately said YES!

Yesterday a bright orange Jeni’s box was delivered to my front door. I gathered the girls for an ice cream tasting picnic outside.

Jeni’s launched a brand new flavor – Watermelon Taffy in her new State Fair Collection. Scooping from this pint into an ice cream bowl, we all agreed it offered an effervescent watermelon soda flavor and reminded us of sucking on a watermelon Jolly Rancher candy. Made with fresh cream, non-fat milk, cultured buttermilk and yogurt (made just for the founder and chief creative officer,  Jeni Britton Bauer, by a fifth generation Ohio dairy). The pretty pink color is developed from pumpkin, apple and beetroot. This ethereally light and extraordinarily creamy ice cream is great on its own, but would make an amazing ice cream float with a watermelon seltzer or sparkling water.

Next we opened the container of Orange Blossom Chiffon. This pale peach colored ice cream tastes similar to a nostalgic orange Dreamsicle. To me it smelled like walking through the orange and tangerine orchards in Ojai, CA. It’s slightly sweet and tad tart and offers the essence of tangerine and orange flowers. A scoop of this oh so creamy flavor would be amazing on peach pie.

The last pint, a dairy-free Lemon Bar, was my daughters all-time favorite flavor. It’s one of Jeni’s new pucker coconut cream, vegan lemon curd concoctions mixed with tiny shortbread crumble, and some coconut flakes to give it a surprising tickle your tongue texture with every lick.

The first brick-and-motar Halo Top opened at Westfield Topanga on Wednesday, Nov. 15, 2017. The Grand Opening Event dished out FREE ice cream and soft serve to first-time guests and loyal fans from 10 a.m. to closing.

What makes Halo Top different than other ice cream shops is three things:

  1. Low Calorie
  2. Low Sugar
  3. High Protein – packed with 16-24 grams of protein per pint. Now you won’t feel so guilty when you eat an entire pint of ice creams while binge watching Stranger Things.

When you first approach the stand alone, ask for a few tastes of the ice cream flavors. Some of the favorite flavors include Cinnamon Roll, Pancakes and Waffles, Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough, Red Velvet, Vanilla Bean, Caramel Macchiato and Sea Salt Caramel.

Ice cream and soft serve can be scooped or swirled into a classic cup or one of four cones. There is a cake cone, sugar cone, taco waffle cone and special Halo Top puffle cone. They come in a variety of colors. What’s a puffle cone? It all started with the Hong Kong egg cake (gai daan jai in Cantonese), a sweet street snack commonly found in Hong Kong and Chinatowns in the U.S. and Canada.

Traditionally, the simple egg-based batter is poured into a special bubble waffle mold, quickly cooked, then removed from the pan. At Halo, staff member Sabrina told me this puffle is more like a Belgian waffle. Puffles are light and airy—slightly crisp on the outside, soft and chewy on the inside. Halo Top Creamery turning them into ice cream cones, simply by cooking the waffle and rolling it into a cone shape. Ice cream goes in the cone, then an assortment of toppings. It’s not stiff like a hard waffle cone.

Since it comes out warm, the ice cream starts melting as it is scooped or twirled inside. Be sure to have a bunch of napkins.

Guests can load up on a variety of specialty toppings that include marshmallow sauce, fresh mango, blueberries, strawberries, mochi, shredded coconut. white and mini chocolate chips.

Located at the 2nd Dining Level Terrace at Westfield Topanga, the owners have a reward loyalty program where followers can win complimentary ice cream and other prizes.

Free Ice Cream on July 22

image007The single-origin ice cream company Choctál celebrates National Ice Cream Month throughout July with National Vanilla Ice Cream Day on Wednesday, July 22, 2015. Choctál’s vanilla flavor comes from 4 different origins including Mexican, Papua New Guinea, Indonesian & Madagascar vanilla.

Choctál will be hosting a “Chill Out” and give away free samples at City National Plaza in Downtown Los Angeles, between 515 and 555 Flower Street from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m.

Choctál is hosting an Instagram contest through July by posting a photo showcasing their single-origin vanilla andimage006 chocolate ice cream on their Instagram feed (@choctal). Followers will be urged to regram the photo and Choctál will pick a winner every week to receive the Choctál World Tour: eight pints of their single-origin varietals.
