Supper in Your Box Seats

Next time you get tickets to a show at the Hollywood Bowl, treat yourself to a multi-course pre-concert meal in your box seats.

My husband and I did this last month when we saw Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers perform their 40th Anniversary Tour. Little did we know, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Singer would die weeks later.

Why order in your seat? First of all convenience. You never need to wait in line or fight the crowds. Simply order by 4 p.m. the day before your concert, travel to the venue, and your table will be set waiting for your arrival.

Second, the Executive chef who has created the Food + Wine menu is one of Los Angeles’ most beloved James Beard Foundation Award Winners – Suzanne Goin. Known for her LA restaurants with partner Caroline Styne – Lucques, The Larder, Tavern and a.o.c., this dynamic duo have partnered with Sodexo Leisure who handle the operations. Goin and Styne are very hands on and creatively control, prepare and present innovative three-course meals, family style feasts, à la carte starters, main courses, and desserts. Styne curates a list of excellent wines to pair with each dish.

The night we dined our server named Guy was very personable. He had a white tablecloth set with cutlery and bottles of water. Once we arrived, he brought out our first course – a colorful sliced heirloom tomato salad with local burrata, torn croutons and opal basil. It was fresh and full of earthy flavors.

Our second starter was yellow and green al dente summer string beans with chopped radicchio, a pleasing paprika vinaigrette and crushed Macrona almonds.

Our server Guy checked in on us and recommended one of Styne’s wines to pair with our fish entrees. Handing us a wine list and small flashlight, we selected a Chardonnay from Melville Winery in the Sta Rita Hills. The gold color with aromatics of orange blossom honey and lemon curd, offered a vibrant acidity. It went well with the fresh Alaskan halibut with fennel-potato gratin, summer herbs, crème fraîche. It also paired nicely with the flavorful slow-roasted salmon with sweet corn succotash, basil and cherry tomato vinaigrette.

Since Tom Petty was about to take the stage, Guy brought us a container of freshly made chocolate chip cookies with a container of milk with a straw, and a Summer berry buckle with crunchy pecan streusel.
