National Ice Cream Day is July 21

FUN FACT: In 1984, President Ronald Reagan designated July as National Ice Cream Month and the third Sunday of July as National Ice Cream Day. This year National Ice Cream Day is tomorrow, Sunday, July 21.

Here’s some of my favorite spots to treat yourself to a creamy and sweet cool treat:

FREE ice cream at Halo Top Scoop Shop

Since National Ice Cream Day is on Sunday, July 21, Halo Top Scoop Shop in Century City is celebrating in the sweetest way by giving away free Halo Top Pops in partnership with the social networking app Bumble. These cool treats are only 50 to 60 calories. Halo Top pop-up freezers are packed with pops at the Scoop Shop in Century City while supplies last. 10250 Santa Monica Blvd. #2815, (424)303-7359.

Boozy ice cream

On July 21, come into Salt & Straw for their James Coffee & Bourbon creation. James Coffee is belnded with the warm, woodsy sweetness of Greenbar Distillery’s Slow Hand Whiskey to make a new spin on coffee ice cream. It’s available at the West Hollywood, Arts District, Studio City, Venice Beach and Larchmont shops. 8949 Santa Monica Blvd., (424)288-4818; 829 E. 3rd St., (213)988-7070; 1357 Abbot Kinney Blvd., (310)310-8429; and 240 N. Larchmont Blvd., (323)466-0485.

Carmela Ice Cream

Come to Carmela, nestled between Mercado Restaurant and Sockerbit candy store near the Grove and Original Farmers Market, and order a scoop or two of Guinness Stout with a touch of molasses. Guinness was created for St. Patrick’s Day, but year-round, this ice cream will have you feeling the “luck of the Irish.” For a lighter flavor, try the organic pear and dry Champagne sorbet. 7920 W. Third St., (323)944-0232.

Artisanal ice cream shop Small Batch

“Top Chef” Season 14 Winner Brooke Williamson and husband/Co-Chef Nick Roberts opened their second Small Batch a few years ago on Venice Boulevard in Mar Vista. The rotating menu of seasonal, housemade ice cream flavors are created by Playa Provisions’ pastry chef Lindsay Kirk using only fresh and natural ingredients found at the local farmers market. The menu also features sorbets, popsicles, shakes, and ice cream sandwich. They offer 150 fun topping choices. Families love sharing the Unicorn Sundae with a “uni-cone”—a chocolate-dipped waffle cone with a sparkler on top, reminiscent of a unicorn’s horn. For adults wanting to stay on the healthier side, the shop also features a great selection of vegan options including Chocolate Coconut, Vegan Lava Flow with strawberries and coconut milk, and a spicy Mango Chamoy.
